Decode Your Laundry Labels (Without Losing Your Mind)

Ever pulled a sweater from the wash only to find it now fits your dog? We’ve all been there, squinting at those cryptic care labels and hoping for the best. At Flydry, we’ve seen it all and rescued more than a few shrunken sweaters! Instead of winging it (and risking a doll-sized sweater), let’s crack the code on those laundry symbols together.

This guide will help you understand what those symbols mean, when you can bend the rules, and how to keep your clothes looking like… well, clothes.

The Secret Language of Care Labels

Care labels usually follow the same order: wash, bleach, dry, iron and dry clean. If a symbol has an X through it, it’s a hard “don’t do it.” Everything else is essentially telling you the maximum rough treatment your garment can handle. Gentler is always safe.

Washing: The Bucket List

That little bucket of water symbol tells you how to wash the item. A number or dots inside the bucket indicate temperature. One dot or 30°C means cold, two dots or 40°C means warm, three dots or 50°C/60° means hot. If you see a hand reaching into the bucket, the item wants a hand wash. And if there’s a giant X? It doesn’t want to touch water at all.

Lines underneath the bucket symbol tell you how delicate to be. No line means you can use a normal cycle. One line means a gentle cycle. Two lines means the delicate setting, the kind you’d use for lingerie or silk.

If you’re ever unsure, stick to a cold, gentle cycle. It’s the universal safe option.

Bleaching: A Triangle Drama

A plain triangle means bleach is fine. Add diagonal lines inside and you’re only allowed non-chlorine, colour-safe bleach. If the triangle is crossed out completely, don’t bleach under any circumstance. Bleach on the wrong fabric is the fastest way to destroy it, and your mood.

Drying: Tumble or Air?

Drying is where many clothes meet their doom. If you see a square with a circle inside, the item can go in the dryer. Dots inside the circle show the heat level: one dot for low, two for medium, three for high. A big X over that symbol means no tumble drying – air dry only.

Sometimes you’ll see a square without the circle. That’s about air drying: a single horizontal line means lay flat, vertical lines mean drip dry, a curved line at the top means hang it on a line. Two diagonal lines in a corner mean the item prefers drying in the shade.

When in doubt, air drying is always the safest move. It takes a little longer but will prevent shrinkage and keep fabrics in shape.

If all this still sounds like a lot, don’t worry. At Flydry, we handle everything from delicate hand-wash items to full-service dry cleaning - so you never have to decode another care label again !

Okay, ad break over. Now let’s untangle the rest of these care symbols.

Ironing: Wrinkle Rescue

The iron symbol is straightforward. If it’s not crossed out, you can iron it. Dots inside the icon show how hot you can go: one for low heat, two for medium, three for high. If there’s an X, don’t iron at all – the fabric could melt or lose its finish. Occasionally you’ll see little steam lines under the iron crossed out, which means you can iron but without steam.

Wrinkles but no ironing allowed? Hang the garment in a steamy bathroom for a while - it’s a surprisingly effective cheat.

Dry Cleaning: The Big Circle

A plain circle means the garment can be dry cleaned. If it’s crossed out, don’t bother – it either doesn’t need it or the solvents will ruin it. If you see the “do not wash” bucket symbol along with the empty circle, you’re dealing with the classic “dry clean only” item.

Some sturdy pieces labelled dry clean only can be hand washed gently at home, but you’re rolling the dice. If it’s expensive or sentimental, take it to the pros.

Your Cheat Sheet

Here’s the short version: cold, gentle washes are safe for almost everything. Air drying is kinder than the dryer. Bleach sparingly, iron with caution and know when to hand your garment over to a dry cleaner. The great thing about care labels is they’re telling you the maximum stress the garment can handle. You’ll never damage anything by being a bit gentler.
